Understanding that successful marriages are the foundation of a successful community, Dar-us-Salaam organized “Rekindle Your Marriage” – a three day weekend getaway for Muslim couples at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort held the weekend of March 28, 2014.

The retreat started on Friday with Juma' prayer and ended at noon on Sunday. About 60 husbands and wives spent time focusing on their relationship with one another and their connection with Allah. With short reminders about kindness, forgiveness, and other necessary ingredients of a blessed marriage delivered after every prayer by Imam Safi Khan, participants attended seminars led by experienced and qualified Muslim marriage therapists and counselors on marriage focused topics like communication and how to appreciate your spouse.

Each day couples had several hours of designated “couples time” to walk the resort grounds, sit by the shore, or just relax in each other's company, while each evening couples enjoyed a sumptuous, romantic dinner served to their 2-person table by waiters in the “Rekindle Your Marriage” private dining room. On Saturday night, the participants gathered in the last third of the night for qiyaamul-layl, while on Sunday husbands and wives were encouraged to pray tahajjud in their rooms as a couple.

Though most couples came from the Maryland-Virginia area, the sold out event attracted couples from places as far away as Chicago and even Nigeria. Couples are already inquiring about the next retreat, evidence that a weekend getaway to focus on rekindling our marriages is what many couples are looking for. With a successful first retreat by Allah's permission, Dar-us-Salaam is already planning more marriage focused, spiritually uplifting events and getaways. All proceeds from the retreat go towards the Home of the Heart campaign to purchase a 66-acre education and community campus for Dar-us-Salaam.
