A Muslim student was framed by two seniors at the Washington Latin Public Charter School, a prestigious school in the nation’s capital.

According to The Washington Post, the incident happened on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 when 600 students and alumni received an email with the subject title, “Bomb.” The email reportedly reportedly read, “Friday there will be big boom.”

The students were expelled by Head of School Martha Cutts for the hoax. After seeing the email, administration informed DC police about the threat and the school began their own investigation. They learned the Muslim student hadn't sent the email after all.

She told reporters the culprits were two high school seniors that were identified and expelled for threatening violence. Cutts said the students came across a shared laptop in a classroom and noticed that the previous user, the Muslim student, didn’t sign out of the email account. They took this opportunity to send out the email from the Muslim student’s account.

Mrs. Syed, a Muslim parent in the DC metro region, is happy that swift action was taken by the school and says that there should be zero tolerance for such occurrences. “It can ruin a person’s life and career,” said another mother.

“Muslim parents should reach out to the family of the expelled students,” stated one father who believes that change in attitudes can only come with sustained contacts.

There is heightened concern amongst parents of Muslim children for the safety of their children in public schools after the news of the arrests of Texas "clock boy " Ahmed Mohamed and a similar case of a Sikh student, Armaan Singh, because they were accused of hoaxes in their schools.

"It's based on the overall atmosphere of Islamophobia in our society," said Ibrahim Hooper of CAIR. If the students weren't "hearing and seeing this kind of anti-Muslim sentiment in their daily lives, they wouldn't have even thought to use a Muslim student's email account to send a bomb threat."

He said anti-Muslim incidents have spiked since the Paris and San Bernardino attacks. He blamed the anti-Muslim rhetoric of Donald Trump and other politicians that he said have helped make Islamophobia part of mainstream culture. "It's been a really bad few months," he said.
