The Gwynn Oaks Islamic Community project in Baltimore City has brought goodness to the this corner of the city. As our readers may recall, the GIC community is building the first masjid from the ground up in Baltimore City—in January 2014 the masjid was near completion and named, Masjid al Ihsan. Now the entire masjid property is in danger of being seized because of an amount totalling $65,280.

GIC is a community based organization that comprises of approximately 60 Muslim families living within the Howard Park - Gwynn Oak area of Baltimore City. According to the management, over the past 5 years, GIC has faced many challenges in the construction of Masjid Al Ihsan.

Following the trends nationwide, from a few neighbors opposing the construction project to dealing with the city’s planning and zoning office, they faced challenges.

The biggest struggle was construction delays. On February 30, 2013 GIC terminated the construction contractor citing breach of contract. The board of GIC and the contractor had a dispute regarding the work performed and payments received which resulted in a lawsuit and a Mechanic’s Lien for $833,000. Otherwise known as a construction lien, this is a security interest that may be acquired in a property by someone who spends material or labor working on that property.

This Ramadan, GIC litigated against the former contractors’ lawsuit with documentation and testimony from the current construction contractor. The judge ruled that the GIC did not do anything wrong by terminating the contract.

The court also ruled that the former contractor is owed $65,280. According to the management if the ‘amount is not paid to the contractor by September 13, 2014, the contractor can seize and sell the property to recoup his awarded judgment.’

GIC’s goal is to establish every facet of Islamic life within the borders of Gwynn Oak, starting with the purchasing of as many homes and providing them to Muslim families.

This community has worked really hard on limited budgets to build their masjid; they have been a force of goodness in the neighborhood, helping bring in a new grocery store in this food desert—which has provided jobs to the community. Many families have settled in the neighborhood cleaning out the liquor stores that would bring alcohol abuse and drugs into the area.

The GIC community needs immediate help and it is incumbent on the rest of the DC Metro area Muslim community to help rescue this masjid from being seized.

“Thank you for all charitable donations and duas. May Allah continue to bless you and grant you the highest level of Jannah for all of your good efforts in helping to establish and save Masjid Al Ihsan. Jazakallah Khayran!” writes Presley Cason, the emir of Gwynn Oaks Masjid in an open letter to the community.
