“O you who wraps himself [in clothing], Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little -, Half of it - or subtract from it a little, Or add to it, and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation.” [73:1,2,3,4]

The Dar Al Hijrah community located in Falls Church, VA has added a new member to their team of Shuyukh and dayees. The latest addition is Imam Abdellah Merhoom, an expert in the recitation of Allah's Book.

Born in Morocco in 1983, Abdellah Marhoom memorized the Quran at an early age in his life, following the direct path of the Sahabas traced back to the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam in learning Quran. In 2005, he was chosen in a Quran reading competition for having the best recitation.

Since being in the United States he has been a part of many communities leading the Salat in Ramadan from Boston to Charlotte; as well as been a part of many other activities in each of these communities. He had the chance to work with notable top Shuyukh in the United States. He has lectured and recited in many major university conventions. Attributing all praise to Allah , he relishes the opportunity to teach the Quran to many literate and illiterate brothers and sisters throughout the U.S.

What is your background as an Imam? Where did you receive your Islamic education?

“I memorized the whole Quran when I was fourteen, then I graduated from Shariah and Ulum Al’-Quran Institute in Morocco in 2006, where I obtained Ijazza (a license) in reading Quran in seven different ways, and Hadith as well. I had been taught Fiqh Maliki, Arabic-grammar, and Quranic calligraphy and intonation by several sheikhs such as, Hussein Merdas, al-Samadi, and al-Aeshi.”

What motivates you?

“I am always motivated to teach Quran and approach its science to Muslims everywhere as I possibly can, and here in America I love to work hard to teach Quran for non-Arabic speaking Muslims and their children, and even Arabic speaking Muslims’ children who are living far from Islamic culture and the Arabic Language. I have developed an easier way to learn the Quran that fits with our trying times.”

What do you hope to accomplish in your position as a new Imam?

“I really wish to help in establishing a university or an institute that majors in Ulum Al-Quran here in America. This project, Inshallah, can instruct the art of memorizing and reading the Quran in different ways for the second and next generations of American Muslims who are looking forward to keep the Quran in their memory as vividly as a present possession throughout their lives.”

What needs will you fill in the community?

“Encouraging the young generation to return back to Quran, and take it as a reference for their daily life. Simplifying Tajweed rules for all generations, old and young, to read the Quran as accurately as possible. Realizing the differences between various ways of reading Quran.”

What are your first priorities?

“Teaching Quran and Tajweed rules.”

What events have been planned to achieve the BOD and Imam's goals?

“Al Hamdulilah, we have started in Dar al-Hijrah to run a Quran institute for memorizing and teaching Tajweed rules, besides Saturday Tajweed classes and Sunday memorizing circles for young children and adults.”

Why did you choose to be a teacher?

“I follow what the Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam said: ‘The best (people) among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it (to others).’ May Allah accept our seeking for good deeds.”

Tell us about your family? Are they new to the area, if so how are they adjusting?

"I am married and have a six-month daughter. My wife, al-Hamdulilah, is a Virginia resident. I like the Washington DC area, it is really a good area. I don’t feel myself being a stranger here. Al-Hamdulilah, me and my family are surrounded by a Muslim community full of good brothers and sister, al-Hamdulilah.”
