Prince George’s County Muslim Council (PGCMC), a political and civic organization representing the concerns of Muslims in Prince George's County, Maryland, is kicking off  its 2013 agenda with a town hall meeting entitled, “The Federal Outlook: A Community Discussion with Representative Donna Edwards”.  The meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 from 6:45 PM to 8:15 PM at the Cabana  located at 14403 Greenview Drive, Laurel, MD.

In 2012, PGCMC focused on educating the Muslim community on major policy issues, such as the state’s proposal to expand gambling into Prince George’s County and the referendum to allow same sex marriage.  Although the outcome of those votes was not favorable, it appeared to galvanize many members of the Muslim community to understand the need to become civically educated and involved.

Also during 2012, PGCMC held several voter registration drives at various masajid in Prince George’s County including Islamic Community Center of Laurel, Prince George’s Muslim Association, Masjid Ibn Taymiyyah, and Avondale Islamic Center. PGCMC plans to continue its voter registration efforts around the county during the months of March, May, July, September and November.

Along with the aforementioned programs, PGCMC plans to hold several other events such as briefings with political figures like State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks, and members of the Maryland State legislature, and issue forums on education and  economic development.  Never forgetting the importance of serving those in need, PGCMC will be collaborating with other organizations on programs to feed the hungry in the county.  Lastly, keep your calendars open in June for the PGCMC First Annual Cookout.  Insha’Allah, there will be food and fun for adults and youth.

All PGCMC events and activities as well as opportunities to join the organization can be found at our recently upgraded  website www.pgcmcmd.org. You can also send an email to info@pgcmcmd.org or follow us on Facebook.
