The ground was ready for spring and a crowd of over 200 well-wishers had gathered on March 24th, 2013 for the groundbreaking of the Muslim Community Center expansion project in Silver Spring, MD. Imam Mohamed Abdullahi started with recitation from the Quran and a special prayer for the successful completion of the project.

The original founders, Dr. Hashim and his wife Suzie, Dr. and Mrs. Aziz Ali Muhammad, Sajjad Durrani, and Arshad Quraishi as well as children and youth in construction hats and ceremonial spades dug the ground. "Allah started it and if it is dedicated to Allah, it will grow," said Dr. Hashim.

The project will add approximately 5,000 square foot under one roof with two floors. On the list of expansion is a Wudu and ADA Toilet facility on the first floor, and an expanded women's prayer area. The second floor will have several new classrooms for the school and a conference room, which will connect to the existing building via a corridor. A daycare facility addition for seniors is also planned in the original building.

Ishtiaq Chughtai, the Chair of Building & Facilities told the audience that 11 contractors were invited but only 3 out of 11 contractors submitted bids. The MCC Expansion project committee investigated the contractors and on Friday March 22nd announced Tamir Construction Inc. of Annandale, VA as the final selection. This company also had the lowest bid of $822,000

The MCC expects that the work will be completed in 32 weeks.
