Zareen Shaukat, 38, is the daughter of the founder of moonsighting.com, Khalid Shaukat and a resident of Montgomery County. She has been battling Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and is in urgent need of a kidney transplant.  Without a job, she has been denied insurance coverage due to pre-existing conditions. An ideal candidate for the new Health Care Act but according to her father, “there is no time to wait for Obamacare”. Because of her age, she is not covered under her father’s insurance and is need of a kidney transplant as soon as possible, for which the expenses exceed $270,000.

“Zareen is one of the most loving and positive people we know. She has done many things to help her community and country. Now she needs your support, She is in the final renal failure stage,” says her father, Khalid Shaukat. She is a mobile interface designer and an alumnus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

A soft-spoken man, known for his sherwanis and Jinnah cap, Shaukat set up moonsighting.com in 1993. The site is used by people around the world to track the visibility of the moon and its phases as calculated by Shaukat using 320 trigonometric terms.

The Islamic Center of Maryland (ICM) sent out notices on their listserv notifying the community: “ICM Administration recognizes the service Br. Khalid Shaukat has provided to the Muslim community, not only in the U.S. but all across the globe.” Several online forums also spread his plea for help.

“I pray for Zareen Shaukat's health, donor and quick recovery, Ameen. May Allah help you, your parents, friends and relatives, Ameen,” wrote Mohammed Qamruzzaman as he made a donation on the website set up for Zareen.

According to the family, Zareen has applied for Medicare which will take time to kick in, but until then they need coverage for the gap time while she is not being covered. Donations will help Zareen with her kidney related medical bills. She also needs a kidney donor. According to an update on the fundraising site, four of Zareen's friends and one stranger have reached out to be tested to be a donor. The family is hopeful that one of them can be a match. Currently a kidney infection needs to clear before she is able to begin dialysis treatments.

“Zareen would like to say her sincerest thank-yous to each and every one of you. Friends, family, and people who have reached out without even knowing her. It is all of your amazing support and kind words that is keeping her going with strength and a positive outlook on a hopeful future. Thank you all again and we will keep you posted on her journey to regaining her health!” writes Shaukat.

They reached 50 percent of their target of $200,000 when the online fundraiser ended on October 31, 2013. If people would still like to donate, they can reach Shaukat at moonsighting@gmail.com.
