Muslim Youth Taught How to Get a Grip

For many African Americans golf was a sport that "other people" played prior to the onset of Tiger Woods pro career. Now Prince George's County, a majority Black county, boasts over a dozen golf courses.

On September 28, 2014, Prince George's County Muslim Council hosted an introductory golf lesson for six young men from Masjid Ibn Taymiyyah and Prince George's Muslim Association at the Glenn Dale Golf Club. The lesson was taught by certified PGA instructor and former pro tennis player John Mudd. Mr. Mudd competed in the 1966 U.S. Open.

Mr. Mudd spent an hour and a half teaching the young men how to properly grip the golf club, how to swing an iron and a driver, and proper putting form. For competition he offered a cash prize to anyone that could exceed his driver shot of approximately 200 yards. After several efforts by the young men Mr. Mudd joked about keeping the money in his pocket.

Bashir Lamptey, son of Ahmed Lamptey,--an Ibn Taymiyyah board member--said he thoroughly enjoyed the outing; "it was a lot of fun and it showed me it's important to have patience." Ibrahim Johnson who hit the longest iron shots stated he had a good experience. "I learned how to use my hips to an advantage and how much force it takes to make the ball go in the hole." ________________________________
