On Sunday, December 14th 2014, I jumped out of bed enthusiastically and donned my favorite abayah, my burgundy hijab and my blazer. I was ready to go to the masjid where a victory brunch was to be held in honor of Maryland's newly elected politicians. The brunch took place from 10:30 am to 1 pm at the Islamic Society of Baltimore and was hosted by both ISB and the Greater Baltimore Muslim Council. As part of The Al-Rahmah Student Government Association, I was also invited to attend the event.

I entered the multi-purpose hall and I was welcomed to the table reserved for the Student Government by Raees Khan, who is a member of the Greater Baltimore Muslim Council. Our table was positioned in the front row, where we had a perfect view of all the politicians. While we waited, we were visited by Ms. Adrienne Jones, who currently serves as the Speaker Pro Tem of the Maryland House of Delegates. She shared with us the details of her job and invited us to visit her office in Annapolis. Then, we began to eat our brunch of both traditional South Asian and Western dishes while we listened to speeches by multiple leaders.

District Attorney, Marilyn Mosby spoke about how we must consider the future of the community and how being unified is important. Others spoke about how we should strive to make this an even more effective environment for the children of the Baltimore community. As student body representatives, we were able to interact with these influential leaders and listen to their enlightening speeches.

The event was exceptional and I appreciated the honor of speaking to politicians such as Lieutenant Governor Boyd Rutherford, Baltimore County Delegate Shelly Hettleman and Senator Shirley Nathan-Pulliam, who all shared their insight with us. Fatimah Williams, the president of the SGA said, "It was an amazing event full of inspirational leaders and I hope to achieve great accomplishments as they have. It was an eye opening event that sparked my interest for internships relating to topics like law and criminal justice as well as journalism." All of the Al-Rahmah Student Government members that were present agreed that the event was informative and motivated them to aid their school and community even further.
