On April 24, 2015, a highly anticipated rally for Turkish-Armenian reconciliation took place in Washington DC, with over 6,000 marchers calling for the US government and international community to resist pressure to label World War I conflict between the Ottoman Empire and Armenians living in its border region a "genocide". Turkey says history shows -- while there were thousands of deaths on boths sides -- the conflict was part of the larger tragedy of World War I and not a genocide. A massive rally took place on the same day in Los Angeles with organizers estimating 130,000 marchers including many Hollywood personalities. The Obama Administration has not labeled the conflict a "genocide". US Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md)  co-sponsored a resolution calling the conflict a "genocide".
