Sheikh Mohammad Al-Hanooti served as the Mufti (Religious Legal Scholar) of the Washington Metropolitan Area and a member of Fiqh Council of North America.  He was born in 1937 in Jaffa, Palestine.  His family was forced to emigrate as refugees to Baghdad, Iraq.  He was educated in Azhar University in Egypt earning a Bachelor degree in Islamic studies.  He earned his bachelors degree in English from the University of Baghdad and later received his Masters Degree in Islamic Law from the Punjab University, Lahore, Pakistan.  After completing his training he taught high school in Iraq for many years and educated many leaders from the region and was a member of the Sharia (Islamic Law) Scholars Society of Baghdad.  He later moved to Kuwait, where he worked as a imam and teacher.

In 1978 he moved to the United States and served as an imam and teacher in The Islamic Center of Jersey City, The Islamic Center of Passaic and lectured in many mosques in the greater New York metropolitan area.

Shiekh Hanooti served as the Imam of Dar Al-Hijrah beginning in 1995 and continued serving as the Mufti of The Washington Metropolitan area until his passing.

From his youth he had dedicated is life to learning and teaching Islam.  He remained a life-time learner, even reversing his public opinions as his knowledge and experience grew.  As a scholar he was often a decade ahead of scholars globally, addressing contemporary issues in Islamic jurisprudence.  He often remarked that the rules in Islam are designed to make life easy.  His legal opinions were neither liberal nor conservative.  They were based on his broad reading of ancient and modern scholars, yet he remained rooted in the text of the Quran linguistically.

He is survived by thirteen (13) children and more than twenty-seven (27) grandchildren.

May Allah, The Most Merciful, continue to shower him with Mercy and grant him the highest place in heaven (Jannatus Al-firdaus Alaa).
