The rain came down for hours but that did not stop the Muslim Youth Organization from the Muslim Community Center (MCC) from serving their neighbors in need at the American Heritage Museum in Washington DC. The 2nd Annual Zakat Foundation of America Fourth of July Barbeque and Iftar has become an event where young American Muslims spend the day upholding ideals of their faith and country.

This year Zakat Foundation of America pledged to feed 100,000 people during Ramadan.

Rain is a blessing for God especially in Ramadan, said the young men and women, who were fasting, as they stood under tents and served meals of burgers, hot dogs, cut fruits and pasta salad. There were tables set up restaurant style where the guests could enjoy their meal.

Crates of bread were delivered to the AIHM through an interfaith partner to hand out to anyone who passed by, free of charge. Neighbors came by and helped themselves and took some for friends and extended family as well.

"They remember that the Muslims fed them on fourth of July," said Amir Muhammad, the curator of the museum.  He quizzed the youth on the history of American Muslims. "How many towns do we have that are named Muhammad?" he asked. There are two towns named after the Prophet Muhammad  in the United Sates. He told the youth about the history of the Muslim camel boys in Texas in the 1800s.

Aisha Lul Ahmed was excited to read about the formation of the different masajid in country.  Usman Sarwar, Vice President of MCC, led the youth on a tour of the museum after service.

"I learned that there are many people in our city who do have the things that I do, not even food," said 8-year-old Yousuf Siddiqui, who accompanied his sister Zaynub Siddiqui who serves on the board of MYO.

"We had the greatest time and served 300+ meals ,Alhamdulilah. we hope everyone who came out enjoyed themselves, got a chance to reflect,"  stated Marwa Ahmed, who runs the MYO Public Relations..
