A great way to celebrate Eid ul Fitr for children was being apart of the 42 Islamic Relief USA Eid toy drives for refugee and low-income children around the country. Two toy drives took place in the DC Metro area, one in Sterling, VA and the other in Laurel, MD.

On Saturday July 11, 2015 MyHope, a youth volunteer group held an Eid toy drive with Islamic Relief from 2-5 pm at the Islamic Community Center of Laurel (ICCL). Children were urged to bring in a new toy to wrap. Stations were set up for wrapping, card making, and getting the 325 wonderful gifts prepared for children in need in the local communities via Islamic Relief.

These went to help needy families in Baltimore with help of Imam Hassan Amin and Muslim Social Services Agency as well as families in DC who currently have children in the hospital for critical care. “What transpired  today was absolutely just the Ramadan barakah,” said the MyHope spokeswoman.

The other drive took place at the ADAMS Main Center on July 1st, 2015, where volunteers gathered to wrapped hundreds of presents. “Very well organized and the kids enjoyed doing their part smile emoticon your young volunteers were great!!” noted Umber Ahmed. Each gift was tagged according to gender and age group.

The IRUSA toy drive was started by long-time volunteer Laila Khan and her children four years ago. Since then, the Eid toy drive has been an IRUSA volunteer-driven effort with logistical and marketing support from IRUSA. Many parents who want to share the Ramadan spirit of giving brought their children to the event. “Thank you for organizing this wonderful event! It was very well organized and a wonderful opportunity to teach the importance of giving to our son. Really appreciate it. Jazakallah!,” shared an attendee.

Islamic Relief USA, a nonprofit charity providing humanitarian aid in more than three dozen countries, distributed gifts for children in need in the US to celebrate the Eid holiday. Over a dozen cities received new toys purchased and wrapped by generous staff and volunteers. Toys were gifted to vulnerable children in the greater DC area, New York, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas, North Carolina and California. Each of the gifts is age and gender appropriate and distribution sites include houses of worship, homeless shelters and children’s wards in hospitals.
