This lecture introduces Jeddah during the Ottoman reform period through the eyes of pilgrims and merchants, two groups who regularly frequented this "gateway to Mecca." Starts at 12 Noon. Guest Lecturer: Dr. Ulrike Freitag is the Director of Berlin's Center for Modern Oriental Studies and a Professor of Islamic Studies at the Free University of Berlin whose research focuses on the urban and intellectual history of the modern Middle East.
