After printing on a once per month schedule for 2009, the Muslim Link is resuming its normal bi-weekly (every other week) publication schedule as of the March 12, 2010 issue. The newspaper, the largest English language publication serving the Muslim community in the greater Washington DC and Baltimore metropolitan area, went monthly last year as part of a cost-cutting strategy needed to keep the paper afloat. The paper, based in College Park, Maryland and affiliated with the Dar-us-Salaam organization which operates Al-Huda School, also laid off almost half of its employees. “It’s a tough time for all newspapers. Not having a full-time writer on staff makes it near impossible to cover all the things happening in the region. The Muslim community in the DC region is one of the most active in the nation,” said Editor Minhaj Hasan. “But we are trying to develop a good group of citizen journalists who can report from their communities. The Muslim community needs to take media in their own hands.” The newspaper used a reader survey to help determine if they should resume a bi-weekly print schedule. Most readers felt the paper should continue bi-weekly and even move up to a weekly cycle, said Hasan, who added an email newsletter goes out each Friday to keep area Muslims abreast of regional news. “We’ve taken a big step in resuming a bi-weekly print. We hope our readers will continue supporting us and come out for our March 27 fundraising dinner,” said Hasan. |
