Despite anti-imperial foreign policy position, Muslims divided over conservative presidential hopeful

With election season in full swing and the front runners for the Presidential seat making their way to the starting line, voters are beginning to get serious about where their loyalties lie.

This race, one candidate stands out for his vocal stance on foreign policy, a position that some believe is a selling point for the American Muslim community. However, Haris Tarin, Director of the Washington D.C. office of The Muslim Political Action Committee (MPAC), warns against relying only on rhetoric, citing the 2008 campaign of President Obama as a cautionary tale.

“When it comes to any elected official that the Muslim community looks at, we have to be able to look at the individual comprehensively and we have to be able to go beyond just the rhetoric,” said Tarin. “That is some of the disappointment that the Muslim American community felt around Obama.”

Longtime Ron Paul supporter and local political activist, Dr. Imad-ad-Dean Ahmad also believes that the previous presidential election can serve as a lesson when preparing for “Decision 2012.”

“The only advantage that we have seen in President Obama is one of phrasing. He speaks in a more judicious and evenhanded manner when he speaks about issues having to do with foreign policy that are of interest to Muslims. However his actions are virtually indistinguishable from the previous government,” said Ahmad.

The stark difference between the youthful Barack Obama who induced scores of chants for change and the quickly graying President Obama whose term accomplishments have been continuously questioned by even his most fervent supporters is not one that should come as a complete surprise said Tarin.

“A presidential candidate and an elected president are two different individuals.”

While Tarin believes this sentiment to be true of all candidates, including Ron Paul, Ahmad who ran for Senate on the Libertarian ticket in 1988 the year that Paul ran for President feels Paul has the knowledge to back his platform.

“Unlike George W. Bush, who didn’t understand foreign policy at all, Ron Paul has a much better grasp on foreign policy. He can call on good advisers but not be so enslaved to them,” said Ahmad.

Although Ahmad recognizes that Paul is unlikely to make it to the presidential elections, he is confident that if he were to somehow find himself on a ticket against Obama, he would be the biggest threat to the Obama reelection campaign over any other potential candidate.

In fact, one poll conducted by NBC News and the Marist College Institute of Public Opinion found Obama and Paul tied for support in a theoretical presidential election. Against all other candidates, Obama came out on top.

Another poll conducted by CNN and ORC International stated Obama as having a 52 percent to 45 percent advantage over both Mitt Romney and Ron Paul.

But will the American Muslim community rally behind Paul if given the opportunity to put him in the Oval office?

The Muslim Link newspaper surveyed its readers to get an idea of their opinion of Ron Paul’s political platform and if the opportunity arises, they would cast their presidential vote for Paul.

Of those polled, nearly 68 percent said they would vote for Paul, 18 percent said they would not and 14 percent said they were unsure of how they would vote.

Though nearly 65 percent of those polled agreed with Paul’s foreign policy stance, the majority stated that they simply did not know enough about the candidate’s other key platforms to make a decision. A striking commentary on the disparate awareness of Paul’s perspectives beyond foreign policy.

“This is where the challenge is. Ron Paul only speaks to our community on issues of foreign policy,” said Tarin. “This is just rhetoric, once you get into office the reality completely changes.”

Because Paul has been vocal on issues of foreign policy, Tarin believes the immigrant American Muslim community finds him of particular interest as they have a very real, vested interest in how U.S. policy shapes what happens “back home.” However, when it comes to the American Muslim population whose focus is primarily on domestic issues Tarin believes Paul’s past will quickly put him in a precarious position.

Melissa Fleming, a survey participant, said that while she did consider Ron Paul as a candidate she might have been able to support, she found that though he was vocal regarding Muslims, other comments he made in the past gave her pause and ultimately swayed her against the politician.

“As Muslims we are a group of people from many different continents, nations, countries and races.  Ron Paul has made incendiary statements regarding African Americans and his super pack continues to make negative comments about one of the candidates because he decided to adopt an Asian child.  It is not my belief that a person who finds it easy to make racist, stereotypical comments about some groups should be trusted with what they say about other groups.  Is it okay if, lets just say, he doesn’t have a problem with perhaps Arab Muslims, but has a problem with Black or Asian Muslims?,” she wrote in response to the TML survey.

Paul has been facing intense criticism over controversial racist statements in newsletters published under his name in the 1980s and 1990s.  As the contents of the newsletters have resurfaced in light of his presidential campaign, Paul has denied ever writing their contents. In a December 21st 2011 interview with CNN he reaffirmed his claim that he neither wrote nor was aware of the contents of the newsletters until some 10 years after they were written.

“I didn’t write them. I disavow them and that’s it,” said Paul.

Flemming is not convinced.

“The question is whether he is a good candidate for Muslims, well who are Muslims but individuals making up a group.  He is a problem for some individuals in our grouping and therefore not a good candidate for Muslims,” she continued.

Other’s argue that many of his position are in line with issues of inherent interest to the American Muslim, particularly his stance on the Federal Reserve.

“He is for abolishing the Federal Reserve System and believe in going back to the gold standard.  Paper money is fiat money. It is worthless and over time loses its value. To go to a gold standard is more Islamic as the early generations used gold, silver as a means of purchasing,” said Salman Sheikh of Silver Spring, Maryland.

While questions remain as to whether or not Paul is a potential candidate who can rally up strong Muslim support, his popularity in the general public appears undeniable, based on recent polls, and his stance on foreign policy remains a punctuation mark in his platform.

However, Ahmad is weary of the expectations of American Muslims when rallying support behind a candidate based on a single platform issue. Though voting is an essential step in shaping public policy, Ahmad believes that without a long term change in how the American Muslim community integrates from the ground up there will be little impact when it comes to truly seeing change in regards to issues of foreign policy that are of interest to Muslims.

“[The Jewish community was] discriminated against the way that Muslims are now but they didn’t just stand up and demand the United states establish Israel, they got involved on the grassroots and once they wanted to make the State, they already had a network in place,” said Ahmad.

Until Muslims establish themselves as politically involved members of the community, in addition to efforts to support the political candidates who share their views and perspectives, there is less chance of being truly influential in the policy making process regardless of the candidate or platform, he said.

  • Mahmood  - Ron
I will definitely vote for Ron. I think he is conservative, most educated and the best candidate out there. I totally agree with his foreign policy of not "policing the world" and building our economy and moral. Last election I voted for Obama, but he has not done enough. I am looking at a terrible economy, poor foreign policies, and private cooperations’ pouring in unlimited amount of money to skew the elections. To me that is encouraging "third world democracy." As Muslims, we should look for a candidate who can be just, intelligent and caring. I see that in Ron.
  • Sarah  - Register as a Republican to VOTE for Ron Paul
Make sure you are registered as a Republican so that you could vote for Ron Paul in the Primary Election. In case you're not convinced yet, check out the video of his speech on Youtube: "Armed Chinese Troops in Texas!"
  • Sal  - Lesser of the Evil Candidates Without a Doubt
Ron Paul did vote "Yes" to go to war to Afghanistan but we don't know if he regretted, we can assume based on his strong stance for the past 5 years that he is against all foreign wars. Out of all the candidates he tells you what he believes not what you want to hear. There is a humble & simple tone in him. His stand on auditing the Federal Reserve and creating sound money backed by gold/silver is perhaps the biggest reason I would vote for him, after all, fiat currency is what leads to corruption, interest, wars, taxes, etc.
  • salman  - I vote Paul last election and will do so next elec
My family voted Obama but I felt he was just a tool of the Democratic party and he's the new boss, but same as the old boss (albeit intelligent). I know Paul has a snowballs chance in Jahannam of getting the Republican nomination. I also realize that the Republicans are going to end up fielding a John Kerry candidate this year (no way Paul) and Obama will repeat a 2nd term somehow.
  • Brent  - Ms. Fleming is misinformed
Melissa Fleming, the woman who expressed concerns about Ron Paul in this article, is clearly terribly misinformed. The author of those racist newsletters has been brought to light. His name is James B Powell, and he is currently the director at Forbes. It is now well established that Ron Paul didn't write those newsletters, even if they came out under his name. They were released after he had left political office to return to his medical practice, and he admits that they were a terrible, inexcusable oversight on his part. Instead of looking to a handful of 20-year-old racist statements he didn't write, she should look at his policy proposals, which would tear down racist policies, such as the war on drugs and the war on terror, which are even supported by President Obama. As for the ad that attacked Huntsman's adopted children, Ms. Fleming may be shocked to learn that her assumption about its origin is completely incorrect. Research has revealed that it was not produced by any PAC whatsoever and, in all likelihood, originated from someone close to the Huntsman campaign. It was a "false flag" attack which attempted to smear Ron Paul by attributing those statements to his campaign. You don't have to support Ron Paul, but, please, do your research before you doubt somebody.

As Salamu Alaikum, Dr. Paul (yes, Ron Paul is a medical doctor, an obgyn)'s position on the Federal Reserve and monetary policy is equally, if not more important than his position on Foreign Policy. I'm so glad Salman Sheik brought up this issue. I suggest that my fellow Muslims to learn more about Dr. Paul and his position on the Federal Reserve, as the current monetary system we have today is extremely UnIslamic. Other things about Dr. Paul - he has a consistent voting record - he is not known to flip-flop on issues. His stance on the Federal Reserve and monetary policy is quite striking on this - he has had this stance for many, many years, even when it was considered sheer madness. (Now that today's economic outlook is bleak, in no small part due to the mess caused by the monetary system, his view has gained popularity). However, the issues of race which have risen are quite worrisome - even though Dr. Paul notes that he never wrote those racist newsletters, he also notes he would not have voted for the Civil Rights Act (as he notes it infringes on employer rights to hire). He is a strong libertarian, which means minimal government and government intervention, absolute free markets and rights to private property. He wants to close down five government departments - Energy, Education, Housing and Urban Development, Commerce and Interior. He is strongly for family values (marriage, anti-abortion, etc). So, a very interesting candidate indeed - there is and will be no perfect candidate, but so far, Dr. Paul is the best I see. At least he has been, to date, brave to hold up unpopular positions, and consistent in doing so, which suggests a measure of integrity sorely lacking in all other candidates, including President Obama. Wasalam! -Sithara
  • Farkhunda Ali  - Excellent coverage
This article raises a lot of different points. The most important thing for Muslims is to realize that we have to be aware about rhetoric in the pre election stage and then still remain involved in politics to hold politicians accountable to their promises. We also have to be realistic and not jump on the bandwagon of any candidate who is primarily trying to draw attention. I agree with Imad Ahmad. Although Ron Paul raises points of interest to the Muslims, there is a low possibility that he will be the next president. Muslims can for sure make a difference by voting for him and showing politicicans that we hold weight in detering votes when we bloc vote based on issues. It is also important for us to understand that our involvement in politics has to be continues, not only during elections. In order to make longterm changes, we must be involved in politics as active law abiding citizens in the US on a daily basis, not just during elections.
  • salman  - Excellent Coverage
aa, Sr. Farkhunda is right that Muslims need to be involved but voting blocks haven't worked in the past. When CAIR (they can't endorse as a 501(3)c entity) was kinda leaning towards Bush II (when he said he would repeal secret evidence in 2000 while running, from Muslim exit polls many of the South Asian community voted for him, the Arabs who remember what his Dad did, didn't and the African American brothers and sisters traditionally voted Democratic and rejected voting Republican. So, there is no consensus even amongst the Muslims. As one Muslim with great insight once said (Br. Malik Shabazz) when asked which party he would join (he compared one to a fox and another to a wolf and said they are both members of the canine family and its a dog eat dog world, I am paraphrasing). I've been Republican and Democratic and even independent in between.
  • Raqeeba  - Ron Paul
I am not as politically aware as others maybe, but Ron Paul is a racist. Though he claims not to know what his signature was "on" those 10 years old documents, in our faith we believe you are accountable for your actions the minute you passed puberty; and you are responsible for all your deeds and as Muslim we know-insha Allah(God willing) how to rid ourselves from "such evil deeds" and his denial does not relieve Ron Paul's documents. I am sure that i am not the only one who does not believe his denial that he did not know what was in those papers-10 years and never once glanced to see what you are signing. Then by alll means FORBID Ron Paul from becoming a presidential candidate.
  • Ahmad  - Ron Paul a so-called racist?
Salaam Sr. Raqeeba and others, Ron Paul is not a racist. How do I know this? 1. He has actively opposed the racist "drug war" which unjustly targets afro-Americans disproportionately. 2. He is the only candidate in these Republican debates to call out the other candidates on their Islam-bashing. 3. As an ob-gyn, he has treated -- for free -- those patients that have come to him without health insurance, a large proportion of whom are afro-Americans and hispanics. 4. He wants to end our country's imperial wars that have ravaged Muslim lands and killed millions. So lets see, almost 20 years ago, a newsletter was written by someone else, but under Mr. Paul's authority, and in this newsletter, there are several racist-sounding statements -- which Mr. Paul has stated numerous times that he never wrote, nor even read, and has repudiated and rejected. So you're latching onto this newsletter thing, but ignoring the other positive points about him that would help tens of millions of black, hispanic and Muslim lives around the world. Sister, the shaytanic news media in this country, as I'm sure you're aware, is beholden to corporate and monied interests -- not to the truth. They see this Ron Paul as a danger to their continued fleecing of the American taxpayers and foriegn nations' wealth. That is why they have been slinging mud at the man. As the Quran states, when we hear "news" from habitual liars -- the perfect description for our mainstream news media -- we as believers must first ascertain the truth of this "news", lest we aid them in spreading falsehood. There is an excellent article on ANTIWARdotCOM explaining how the media has been falsely attacking the man from different angles. Since the comments section of this website doesn't allow posting urls, just google "antiwar ron paul we shall overcome" to read the article.
  • PEACE
How can we be sure that no matter who the candidate is,is he really going to do what is promissed on the campaign? Ithink it looks like there is a kind of reverse mode of action once they step in to the white house.Iam afraid they will not keep their promise,it's a trend!!!Inorder to take care of THE FEW you need to have the majority's approval- our voice.
  • Salma  - check their record
Ron Paul is the *only* candidate we can TRUST, whose message stays the same no matter which group, or which individual, he is speaking to. He does not "pander". He has a 30+ year record that shows he has been consistent all that time. It is proven by his voting record. You can read his numerous speeches on the House floor, his many books (eg End the Fed; The Revolution - A Manifesto; Freedom Under Siege etc), tons of articles, interviews etc. He does not bend to lobbyists (including AIPAC!) which is why they do not bother with Dr. Paul anymore. This is our CHANCE OF A LIFETIME to have an HONEST, HUMBLE president who can help America rise back to prosperity. Even his "Restore America" economic plan includes a salary reduction for him as President - down from $400,000/year to $40,000 (the median salary of the American worker), along with salary & expense reductions for all of Congress. As it is, he has never voted for an increase in salary, and even returns to the Treasury a portion of his congressional budget every year! (What kind of integrity does that take?) Dr. Paul also voted against the NDAA, which Obama signed into law on New Year's Eve (while everyone was distracted, and after PROMISING he would not sign it). The NDAA gives President power (AGAINST the Constitutional limits of the Executive Branch) to arrest & detain even American citizens on American soil just bc he finds them "suspicious", and detain them indefinitely w/o lawyer, w/o charge, w/o trial. Dr. Paul has spoken out against that strongly (youtube has his speech) As far as economics: If Dr. Paul does not WIN, America is doomed to financial collapse. Honestly. (unless there is some other DRASTIC economic policy change, not likely to happen). Google "David Walker", former comptroller of the USA who resigned his position a few years ago to tour America to tell people that the US is bankrupt and is facing financial ruin - he had to do it bc the media and the politicians (except Ron Paul and a few others) were not telling Americans the truth. The US Dollar is starting to crumble, and we all will become destitute and living under a regime that is becoming more & more authoritarian. Vote Ron Paul as if your future, your children & grandchildren's future - and very LIFE - depend upon it. And if God wills, He can help us help a President Paul to Restore America.
  • Lorraine Muhammad  - Politics
As-Salaam Alaikum. The sad part of politics is that it's the same as law, "whomever tells the best story wins"! Pres. Obama is a figure head of something that was established long ago. He can appoint a cabinet and advisers, but he cannot change the system. I have been very disappointed in him as my choice, but also see that his hands are tied by Republicans and a racist system. Right now the country will only be satisfied if "he" is out, "he" created all that is wrong and did not fix any of the problems. I like some of the things that Ron Paul has said, but not enough to vote for him. His campaign commercials promoting his being an ob/gyn are of women who are obviously not of child bearing age, but they are supposed to be believable. Ask yourself how there can be justice where there are 50 states and a different justice for each one. Inshallah, we will all make the best choice.
  • Salma
See my post above, in response to "PEACE". Re his commercials re ob/gyn - those WERE his actual patients! Dr. Paul is 76 years old (same age Nelson Mandela became President of South Africa, by the way) and was delivering babies in the 1960s!(including a few years as a surgeon in the Air Force. In 1976 he was elected to Congress then went back to his ob/gyn medical practice from about 1989-1996. (He only went back to Congress in 1996 because he saw how the US was going in a bad direction & away from the Constitution.) So yes, those WERE his patients! Dr. Paul delivered over 4000 babies - that's why soooo many of his constituents are either former patients as moms or the babies, now all grown up and some having their kids delivered by him. They support him wholeheartedly because they know who he is. As to the 50 states and different justice systems: You may want to do some research on the history of the United States of America, including reading the Constitution. America was created as a "Republic" (NOT a democracy, where majority rules, and the rights of the minority is ignored per the majority). The entire concept of America was pretty new, and the idea was to have 50 separate states, running independently, with a very SMALL federal govt there for only very LIMITED purpose: To protect rights of citizens vis-a-vis their State govt; to engage in trade agreements with other nations; to defend the entire land in a "united" way.
  • Nuha  - I would support Ron Paul
Salam alaikum, Unfortunately I am not n America, so I cannot vote, but if I could I would "definetly" vote for Ron Paul. Yesterday I watched many videos on YouTube, I watched many of his speeches for many many hours. One cannot compare him to Obama, Obama has given up in this establishment and more or less turns with the wind and says what the people want to hear, but Ron Paul doesn't care the people booh at him, he says the same and has the same ideologies for decades, one can see that in old videos, where he says the same, as he says now (YT: Ron Paul's Words of Warning From 1983 to 2008 ), and he doesn't say on Fox something else than on CNN or John Stewart. The What If (on YT) speech is just amazing, even when you listen to it without dramatic music in the background, and he is religious and believes in God. In one video he speaks out that he doesn't believe that Christianity is speaking out loud and bragging about how pious one is and that he believes that Isa, alayhi salam, brought peace and not war. He seems quite humble in that video. He doesn't just see the last view years or one or two wars but he sees the history of the Middle East and speaks out loud that what is happening to the US is because of what the US did to the different countries now and also in the past. I have never seen a man like that, so that's why I am so amazed. I now sent an email via his website asking about his stance regarding freedom of religion and Muslims, that's why I wrote "definately". But in the end I have to say, that even if he would be a candidate and win the elections, I do not think he alone could conquer the strong firmly based greedy zionist establishment in Washington. The young and the smart people support him, but not even the Republican party supports him or the media, who like forgetting mentioning him these days.
