The Muslim Link newspaper's annual fundraising dinner has a reputation for bringing speakers who are sometimes politically incorrect, but always brutally honest.Journalists who dispatched real stories out of war-torn Iraq like Dahr Jamail. Reporters who went behind Taliban lines in Afghanistan like Yvonne Ridley. Rare politicians who dare to stand up for oppressed Muslims like Britain's George Galloway. All of these courageous voices have held the microphone at our annual dinner. This year, our guest is John Perkins, an economic hitman. He has been pressured, bribed, and threatened not to reveal what he knows about how the corporate-political-military nexus of the United States tricks resource rich “third world” countries into debt, and then forces them into agreements which transfer the wealth of their people into the pockets of elites in the United States. John Perkins knows, because his job was to get the agreements signed. By any means necessary. Perkins defines economic hit men as "highly paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. They funnel money from the World Bank, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and other foreign ‘aid' organizations into the coffers of huge corporations and the pockets of a few wealthy families who control the planet's natural resources. Their tools include fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, and murder. They play a game as old as empire, but one that has taken on new and terrifying dimensions during this time of globalization." Using his experience making deals worth trillions of dollars in Indonesia, Panama, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere, Perkins will lift the veil showing how the disparity between nations continues to grow, and then offer some of his insights on what we can do about it. His “Confessions of An Economic Hitman”, released in 2004, spent 70 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List. He will be signing copies of “Confessions” and his others books at the Muslim Link's dinner. His titles will be available for purchase at the event. The event, “Uncovered: Finding the Stories that Matter” will be on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at 5pm at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. ----------------------
