A February 10, 2010 report in Talking Points Memo says the United States is looking into changing the law so it can cancel the citizenship of people its views as “terrorists”, making detaining them or assassination them much easier.

In “Pentagon Quietly Explores De-Citizenship of US Citizen Terrorists” by Steve Clemons, the case of popular Islamic lecturer Anwar Al-Awlaki is cited as a possible reason the US is looking into de-citizenship. Al-Awlaki is on a list authorized by the White House for targeted assassination.

“A senior Member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has told me that to his knowledge, there has been no serious discussion in the Committee of stripping US citizenship from terrorists, but a senior Pentagon official has confirmed that some in the military are exploring the upsides and downsides of such a more routinized mechanism for stripping citizenship,” wrote Clemons in his report.
