On January 11, 2013, the US Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) called for proposals to develop "distributed systems" which would "hibernate in deep-sea capsules for years, wake up when commanded, and deploy to surface providing operational support and situational awareness."
The slumbering drones would be hidden across the globe at the bottom of deep seas in pressurized containers which would rise to the surface on command and release the drone into the sky to " support the Navy with distributed technologies anywhere, anytime over large maritime areas." “To make this work, we need to address technical challenges like extended survival of nodes under extreme ocean pressure, communications to wake-up the nodes after years of sleep, and efficient launch of payloads to the surface,” said Andy Coon, DARPA program manager on the agency's website at www.darpa.mil.
The following commentry on the development of deep sea deployed drones is from Liberation News, courtesy of Walter Smolarek for the ANSWER Coalition which is staging a major protest against drones in Washington DC on April 13, 2013.
Capitalism not only destroys human life in the present, it distorts the creative potential of humanity and prevents us from realizing a future of peace and abundance. A clear example of this terrible reality of the capitalist system is the recent revelation that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency—a government entity that works on high-tech military projects—is developing underwater drone technology. |
