ICM (Islamic Center of Maryland) held its annual Ramadan fundraiser at Bohrer Park in Germantown, MD on Saturday, July 13th to raise money for their building expansion project. The event drew in a crowd of close to 200 community members that were eager to take part in the masjid’s efforts.

The youth of ICM began the event, giving a presentation about how much the masjid has impacted their lives, and how much they believe it is important for Muslim youth to have a center like ICM that connects them to their faith.

Members of ICM’s board of trustees then went over what the new building will include. The completed building will be over 45,000 square feet, one of the largest in the area, and will have classrooms for the full time school ICM plans to open. A gymnasium, commercial kitchen, library, health clinic, food bank, daycare, conference hall and media room will also be included in the building. The new building will allow ICM to accommodate for a bigger congregation and hold bigger and better community events.

The masjid has been planning their expansion for years; however, the wheels were finally set into motion in early 2008, and in April 2013 ICM began to clear the lot behind their masjid to use for various recreational and educational activities.

ICM’s master plan requires close to $9 million, out of which they have raised $2.7 million. The masjid’s building permit is being evaluated by the county, but ICM’s board of trustees hopes that they will obtain their permit in the next couple of months and begin building their new masjid.

Yaseen Shaikh, Imam of ISB (Islamic Society of Baltimore) conducted the fundraiser on behalf of ICM. Shaikh told the story of Salman Farsi, a young man that went great lengths to find faith before converting to Islam and becoming a companion on the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam. Shaikh’s story connected back to the group of people ICM is expanding their masjid for: the youth.

ICM believes that it is very important for masajid to be youth oriented to support the young Muslims that are slowly losing ties with Islam. The masjid hopes that their new masjid will provide the Muslim youth in the area with a foundation of Islam that will keep them connected with their faith.

Over $87,000 were raised that night. Iftar, Maghrib and dinner followed the fundraiser; guests helped themselves to food catered by Eastern Kabob House. ICM is thankful for such successful event made possible by the support of the community. The efforts of the Gaithersburg area Muslims are bringing ICM closer and closer to their goal.
