Altaf Husain Chosen as 2015 Social Work Educator

March was a blessed month for Dr Altaf Husain, a familiar face to many DC Metro Muslims. The D.C. Metro Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) selected Dr Altaf Husain as the 2015 Social Work Educator. He was also promoted to Associate Professor at Howard University with tenure.

According to a Howard University announcement, Dr Husain serves as the chair of the Community, Administration and Policy Practice concentration in the School of Social Work. He is also a research fellow at the Center for the Study of American Muslims of the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding and the Center for Global Health. His tenure at the University includes various positions across campus including in the Office of the Provost and Chief Academic Officer as Executive Assistant for Academic Affairs, in the Office of the Dean of the Chapel as a member of the Interfaith Fellowship Advisory Council, and currently as a member of the Universityís committee to develop the Periodic Review Report. Dr. Husain is also an adjunct faculty member in the School of Social Work.

"As an aspiring and hopefully emerging scholar, the Educator of the Year award provided me a strong sense of reassurance that the scholarly and research agenda I am pursuing is resonating with students and fellow faculty colleagues. I see this award not as a culmination of efforts rather a reminder to continue to pursue teaching and scholarly excellence," said Dr. Husain.

On April 7, 2015 at 7 PM, Dr Husain will conduct a session at the National Cathedral on "Exploring Islam in America." He will focus on Islam as a faith tradition and the coming of the faith to America through immigration, missionary activity, intellectual pursuits and conversion and U.S. security interests.
