Another father shot down and yet another Muslim brother murdered in Richmond, Virginia. Muhammad Abu-Bakr, 56, was gunned down on a neighborhood street on October 18, 2015. He was the brother of the former Imam of Masjid Abu Bakr al Siddiq and Masjidillah in Richmond, Mustafa Abu-Bakr.  The Imam now lives in North Carolina.

Muhammad Abu-Bakr was on his way to work around 9 p.m. and was shot near the bus stop in the Providence Park neighborhood. He passed away at the scene. His funeral took place at the Jenkins Funeral Home. The deceased was married and is survived by a son, a sister and five brothers.

Abu Bakr was buried at Al-Barzakh Cemetery - Islamic Funeral Services of Virginia, next to an infant, whose parents recently moved to Northern Virginia but chose to bury their baby at the Barzakh Cemetery.

Omar Smith, a former long term Richmond resident, set up an online fundraiser to raise money for the burial costs of Abu-Bakr. Within 17 minutes the $1000 needed for the janazah were collected.

Carroll Abdul-Malik attends the same masjid as Abu-Bakr and knew him as an friendly person who loved history. Abdul-Malik says that the area is known for gun violence. “Muslims don’t have a beef with anyone  here or [anything] like that,” he said. “He was a good person, concerned about humanity and the community. He had a passion for reading and history.  He wasn’t an introvert; he wasn’t an extraordinary out going person,” say Abdul-Malik.

Police are still investigating and are calling this a homicide.
