The Political Sentencing of Nicholas Young

In another precedent-setting case, Nicholas Young was found guilty this past December of obstruction of justice and attempting to give material support to terrorism. On February 23, 2018, Young was given a 15-year sentence (with many more years of state supervision upon his release).

Truth be told, this former highly regarded law enforcement officer, and now convicted felon, is being punished for falling into another one of the government’s preemptive prosecution traps. He attempted to help someone he thought was a friend; someone who turned out to be working for the government as an undercover informant-provocateur with the aim of manufacturing another terrorism scare, this time in the DMV.

While much has been written about this 38-year-old ‘white Muslim convert’ from Alexandria, Virginia, being the first law enforcement officer to be convicted for “terrorism,” little is said about how he was relentlessly pursued for a number of years before he finally became entrapped in a web of deceit and betrayal. Also left largely unsaid were the unsuccessful attempts by the FBI to recruit him before the government decided to go after him.

Nicholas Young was reportedly under FBI scrutiny for six of the 13 years he patrolled the Metro transportation system in the DMV. It took that long before they could finally indict him on chargeable offenses. It should also be noted that two government paid informant-provocateurs (professing to be Muslims) were involved in this case; and they both frequented two of the largest centers in Northern Virginia – ADAMS and Dar Al-Hijrah. (One was even said to have taught a class at one of the centers.)

This is another one of those fake terrorism cases loaded with tragic irony and tragic results. In the aftermath of the Parkland (FL) tragedy, President Donald J. Trump echoed a sentiment that this writer has had for years now, when he tweeted: “Very sad that the FBI missed all of the many signals sent out by the Florida school shooter. This is not acceptable. They are spending too much time trying to prove Russian collusion with the Trump campaign... Get back to the basics and make us all proud!”

POTUS had the right idea, but the wrong application. It’s not Russians; it’s Muslims!
