It’s that time of the year: masajid are filled during Isha salah, and a mixture of excitement and relief is in the air for many as Shabaan races to welcome Ramadan.

Many masajid in the area held Ramadan Prep workshops and Quran nights. From Dar al Hijrah in Virginia inviting reciters to herald the month of the Quran with Divine Words to mCLean Islamic Center hosting a Deaf Friendly Ramadan Family Night in collaboration with Global Deaf Muslims.  In preparation for Ramadan, The Islamic Community Center of Laurel hosted (ICCL)Shaykhul Hadith Mohammaed Amir from down under on May 8th, 2018, after Maghrib.

The Islamic scholar is one of the leading scholars of New Zealand. Shaykh Amir is the Chairman of the Religious Advisory Board of the Federation of of Islamic Association of New Zealand and Chairman of the Hilal Committee of New Zealand and was introduced by Imam Adil Khan of ICCL.

Shaykh Amir, who is a graduate of faculty of the Qu’ran and Higher Islamic Studies from the Islamic University in Al-Madinah and holds an undergraduate degree from Darul Uloom Deoband, India. gave reminders which encouraged the audience to develop taqwa and piety. Some of the signs of taqwa he noted was that “Allah will be constantly present in our heart and thoughts. Islam becomes our nature. You find tranquility in deen.” He continued on with “your desire become subservient to what the Messenger ﷺ has brought. The deen becomes our flavor. You find joy in serving Allah’s creation. You become satisfied with he will of Allah. You become satisfied with little.”

He stated that when you love the Prophet ﷺ then you will love what he loved. You will experience poverty and less attachment to this world, said the shaykh who is also the Vice President and spokesperson of the Ulama Council of New Zealand and a member of the Shari'ah Advisory Committee of the World Halal Food Council and former Imam of the  Wellington Islamic Centre (International Muslim Association of New Zealand Inc).

He urged the audience to make use of Shabaan and fast as much as possible so that the first days of Ramadan are was on us and we can enjoy them instead of suffering headaches and withdrawals. "What are you waiting for? A crushing poverty that makes you forget everything. Are you waiting for riches that make u transgress the limits? Are you waiting for a disease that will destroy u? Are you waiting for old age that will make you forget? Are you waiting for sudden death? Are you waiting for the fitnah of Dajjal? Are you waiting for the Day of Judgement? What are you waiting for? There are no excuses to relax and not take the responsibility that you have to Allah and to the Ummah,” he beseeched the audience.

The shaykh ended with a powerful thought that Ramadan is about worship. Eidain are celebrations of achievement of worship by worshippers, not celebrations for the sake of celebration.

Allah humma Balighna Ramadan.
